Regarding conditions for spring 2012, Figure 4 shows
maps of
ice categories derived from
sea -
ice age for the beginning of May 2012, with
maps for early May and mid-September 2011 included for comparison.
These
ice -
age maps are based on tracking the motion of
sea ice using passive - microwave satellite data.
The Kwok figure is reinforced by Figure 4 by Jim Maslanik and Mark Tschudi, which
maps the distribution of different
sea -
ice age classes.
The
ice age product is based on a 15 %
sea ice concentration threshold to be consistent with the threshold used for
mapping overall
sea ice extent.
Regarding initial conditions for Spring 2010, Figure 2 by Maslanik and others shows
maps of
sea ice classes derived from
sea ice age for April 2010 and 2009.
It is unfortunate that
maps of multi-year
sea ice distribution for 2010 derived from QuikSCAT (provided by Nghiem) are no longer available to compare with
sea ice age calculations, as in previous years.
