We admitted just over 500 marine mammal
patients in 2012, studied the brains of
sea lions, began using specialized darting equipment in the rescue of animals in tricky locations, and brought a
sea lion that suffered from a severe bout of leptospirosis back from the brink of death!
The Marine Mammal Center is treating an unprecedented number of
patients this year, as starving
sea lion pups are stranding all along the coast of California.

Our
patients include include pinnipeds like California
sea lions, northern elephant seals and harbor seals, as well as
sea otters, whales, dolphins, porpoises, and even
sea turtles.
This unusual
patient wasn't an escapee, he was just a little starving California
sea lion.
