Cores extracted from deep -
sea sediment deposits contain evidence of earlier cold periods.
Earlier research, based on deep
sea sediments deposited between the last Ice Age and the present warm period, has found evidence of eight melting events in the region, the largest occurring 14,700 years ago.

From the geochemical analyses carried out on the
sediments deposited during the past 10,000 years in the Laguna de Rio Seco lagoon, a remote alpine lake in Sierra Nevada, at 3,020 m. above
sea level, evidence has been found of atmospheric pollution from lead.
The shale, named for the town of Eagle Ford, TX, is a geologic remnant of the ancient ocean that covered present day Texas millions of years ago, when the remains of
sea life (especially ancient plankton) died and
deposited onto the seafloor, were buried by several hundred feet of
sediment, eventually turning into the rich source of hydrocarbons we have today. The shale was first tapped in 2008 and now has around 20 active fields good producing over 900 million cubic feet per day of natural gas.
The only way that significant amounts of this mud could have been
deposited as
sediment in the
sea would be if the ice sheet had retreated inland and eroded these rocks, say the team.
The

They analysed
sediments from a shallow Atlantic Ocean shelf where
sediment accumulates faster than it does in the deep
sea, making it easier to see seasonal fluctuations in the amount
deposited.
The latter events left behind distinctive rock - sequences typically consisting of tillites (ancient boulder - clay, now solid rock) representing ice -
deposited debris, overlain with a depositional break by cap - carbonates (chemical
sediments of marine origin
deposited during interglacials following global
sea - level rises).
Apparently the Yucatan Platform and presumably the Ambergris Caye area was land 195 million years ago and between 195 and 140 million years ago (during the Jurassic Period) the area was slowly inundated by
sea waters and
sediments began to be
deposited on the platform area.
«The rate at which
sediment is
deposited and new land is created is much slower than the rate at which climate change and
sea level rises are taking place,» he said.
The Munroe Thuruthu islands in Kerala are gradually sinking due to subsiding coasts, eroded shoreline, loss of wetlands, reduced
sediment deposits and
sea - level rise brought on by climate change
The only reason most of the Netherlands is not
sea - bottom is that the
sediments deposited by the Rhine more or less keeps up with the sinking.
They live only in a few borderline places, however; for global temperatures scientists use not only other species of trees but a wide variety of «proxies» from ice cores, coral reefs, cave
deposits, the
sea floor, pollen in lake
sediments, boreholes in rock and so forth.
Scientists devised ingenious techniques to recover evidence from the distant past, first from
deposits left on land, then also from
sea floor
sediments, and then still better by drilling deep into ice.

Sediment Deposits Will be Overtaken by
Sea Level Rise

As part of the Dead
Sea Deep Drill Core Project, Goldstein and other colleagues drilled deep below the lakebed of the Dead
Sea in 2010 and 2011 to pull up more than 1,300 feet (400 meters) of
sediment in a long column — a record of
sediment deposits spanning 200,000 years.
