Judy, from what I've read, you can not successfully apply poly
over a wax coat.
I really like threading
over waxing.
It wouldn't be ideal for a full piece to use chalk paint
over the wax because I would be worried about adherence, but when doing an accent like a whitewash, the incredible adherence of chalk paint works just fine.
After transferring my letters I lightly distressed the board, mostly around the edges, and used a knife point to «pick up» the paint that was
over the wax, revealing the chalky black beneath.

I like this application because is leaves no sheen and replicates the unwaxed look of the piece (or use
over wax) and still protects.
Every brand of poly I've used specifically says not to use
over wax as it won't adhere properly.
Every poly I've come across cautions against applying
it over wax.
That said, there's more than one person who's commented here that they've used poly
over wax with success.
It bothered me because I knew he would be putting his feet on the chair rungs so I took a chance and put two coats of General Finishes Flat top coat on the rungs
over the wax.
AS says you can paint
over her wax once it's fully cured using her own brand of chalk paint.
You'll have the same issues with dark wax, and unfortunately you can't poly
over wax.

over wax once it's cured.

I'm going to be totally honest here: I used the polycrylic
over wax this time because I needed to seal the cabinets and I was already using polycrylic somewhere else in the house and had a open can and wet brush.
Once you go to paint
over the wax - there is no extra prep work needed.
Attempting to add another coating — such as Chalk Paint ® Lacquer or another varnish or even polyurethane —
over a wax finish is futile.
If you want to paint
over wax, you can use ASCP without removing the wax!
Some sources online may have another opinions, Annie Sloan claims you can paint
over her wax with her Chalk paint, yet even some of her distributors recommend removing the wax with Mineral Spirits in certain situations.
With that said - in general... you should be able to paint
over a waxed piece right away.
So, what if you printed it out, laid it on cardboard and used an x-acto knife to make a stencil to put
over the wax paper and just glommed on the puffy paint and then lifted the stencil straight up (wax paper taped down).
