I set out to determine which cities I should focus on
for my
search to find either business or
first class award space.
I knew that I wanted us to fly back to the UK in Singapore Airlines Suites
Class so that was the
first flight I
searched for... and there was one date with 2
award seats showing.
Though Delta isn't known
for offering a generous amount of
award space to its partners, I was able to find four
first -
class award seats available in August from Denver to Maui via Los Angeles and Seattle using the online
award search engine
for Alaska Airlines, which you don't even need an account to use.
If you
search for economy
class by default on a carrier that has four cabins, you will not see
first class award availability.
While it makes it easier to
search for Singapore Airlines
award space online (United blocks it) it nevertheless prohibits
award travel in
first or business
class on Singapore Airlines on flights operated by the Boeing 777 - 300ER or Airbus A380 - 800.
Contrast that to what I saw when
searching for departures from Frankfurt, Milan, Paris and Zürich where I often saw 2
First Class awards and up to 8 Business
Class awards available on the same flight!
First and business
class availability
for awards is strong, but online
searches via its website can be tricky.
This can problematic if you are
searching for business or
first class awards, so unless you are
searching for flights in economy, you should always
search British Airways one segment at a time.
(Although we're not
searching for «La Premier,» or
first class, in this example, remember that Delta doesn't permit using SkyMiles
for international
first class awards.)
As most readers know, it's already become very difficult to book Cathay Pacific
first class in advance using AAdvantage miles, especially if you're
searching for two
award seats.
