Most
of us would no doubt say that the gospel is, first
of all, Jesus» own proclamation
of the Kingdom
of God, the terms
of admission into it and the conditions
of its coming; and then that it is, in the
second place, the apostolic proclamation
of this message
of salvation, with the added emphasis and fresh
meaning given to it by the resurrection
of Jesus and the continuing work
of the holy Spirit in the church.
Big words like «
salvation», «save», sacrifice», «redeemer», «redemption», «righteousness», «repentence», «mercy», «sin», «forgiveness», «born again», «
second coming», «God», «Jesus», and «Bible» and collections
of words like «the creeds», «Lord's Prayer», and «liturgies» have acquired
meanings that are serious distortions
of their biblical and traditional
meanings.
Though we often think
of the word «sanctified» as a reference to the «
second stage»
of salvation, so that after a person is justified, they then become sanctified, we must remember that the most basic
meaning of the word «sanctified» is «to set apart.»
The significance
of Abraham is, first, that God in fact promised to extend his
salvation through Abraham to all nations, and
second, that the story
of Abraham reveals not only the temporary sign
of the covenant (circumcision), but also the
means (faith) by which a person
of any nation can come and share in the promised blessing.

The
second reason this is an important book is that, despite its nature as a catalog
of ways and
means, it strains against the technological reductionism, extremely common in the climate movement these days, in which green technologies, more or less on their own, are seen as our
salvation.
