Filling the Focus

gallery, which is based in Madrid, the work engages the phenomenon of pareidolia, which accounts for the mind's habit of
seeing things or finding patterns where none exist — «like if we look at a cloud and
see a face or an animal,» Estrella, the
gallery director, said.
The
galleries will all be at liberty to change up their
sections as often as they
see fit, and they'll take turns being responsible for staffing the space from day to day.

Revisiting an idea he first employed in his late - seventies project «128 Photographs of a Painting», he divided the work's surface into two vertical
sections, then halved those halves, and so on, he had each work printed to his desired scale, so that we might contemplate what have become remarkable horizontal, rhythmic fields of fine lines, oscillating with vibrations of color, the largest of which stretches over ten meters, as
seen on the
gallery's first floor.
Even when they featured the work of a single artist — mimicking the one - person shows viewers are used to
seeing in
galleries, as in the Frame
section of Frieze, devoted to new
galleries presenting individual artists — the hangings were thrown together in a way that never would have been countenanced in a
gallery.
Frieze is strong with its curated
sections - with the Live
section as well, and with helping young
galleries - giving them a chance to be
seen.
2014 also
sees the introduction of «Live», a new
gallery section at Frieze London for ambitious, active or performance - based installations.

saw an international jury select a work by Dorothy Iannone acquired from Air de Paris in the new
gallery section Sex Work, a work by Mary Beth Edelson acquired from David Lewis also in the Sex Work
section, a piece by Hannah Black purchased from Arcadia Missa in Focus, and a work by Lawrence Abu Hamdan acquired from Maureen Paley in the main
section.

The fair's 2017 installment boasts not only roomier aisles and bigger booths, but an increase to the number of
galleries in the Presents
section, which offers solo or duo artist presentations by young dealers, and a revitalized Focus
section, bringing in new or rarely
seen work curated by Jarrett Gregory.
«In terms of the diversity of what you
see, there's not many museum collections that can replicate what is presented at TEFAF,» said Jason Busch of New York's Jason Jacques
Gallery, which is showing in the design
section with a curated presentation including ceramics by Beate Kuhn and Anne Marie Laureys, paintings by Richard Anuszkiewicz, Josef Albers, and Victor Vasarely, and a suite of walnut anthroposophical furniture attributed to Felix Kayser.

gallery Mayoral's large - scale re-creation of Joan Míro's studio on the island of Mallorca.
The
section takes its title from a Melvin Edwards» series of sculptures
seen in the
gallery, part of a larger series of his Lynch Fragments, which, through their materiality, touch on American identity, how slavery evolved into mass incarceration, and ideas surrounding economies of labor.
For this year's edition of Art Basel's Art Unlimited
section, which provides
galleries with ample space to present ambitious displays of the kind usually
seen in museums or biennials, curator Gianni Jetzer has gathered together a diverse spread of displays that bounce across mediums, tonal registers, and even lighting, with about half of the booths occupying darkened chambers.
Focus is a
section for
galleries up to ten years of age presenting projects specifically conceived for Frieze with works not
seen previously in an art fair context.

gallery artist Martha Quinn who in addition to creating new public sculptures, will
see her work exhibited in the 182nd Royal Hibernian Academy's annual exhibition in the invited artist
section which will open in late May.
