Line?
Seeing the
line that connects great
painting, not in the art historical way, but how it (
painting) relates to the picture plain, how it relates to life and the poetry of it.
Selecting common hand
saws, shovels, axes, baking pans, and cake servers, quotidian objects that are assigned along gender
lines of domestic work and construction work are
painted with titillating scenes of women frolicking about in a lake, or simply posing in nature.
For Tworkov, it was vital that the intersecting vertical, horizontal, and slanted
lines that resulted from this technique still allowed the viewer to
see the simplicity of the
painting's fundamental structure.
We
see the
paint smooth as a final pass cuts across incised and engraved
lines, thick from hands and palette knives or thin from bush handles.
The passage is three
lines long, and refers to the sensation of standing under a waterfall, framing it in a camera and
seeing a composition similar to a Barnett Newman
painting.
A crack of synesthetic thunder sounded inside me as I felt the cold, hard marble through my shoes, grasped the lightness of the canvas by comparison, and came to terms with an artist bypassing Serra's fearsome weight and brawny power; finding essences between

Every single one has extraordinary color: the variety and brightness each piece carries, detail: the amount of work that is put into every aspect of each
painting that make it look so realistic and abstract, lighting: the bright light shining throughout each image giving each piece an intriguing positive / enthusiastic energy, shading: the detailed shadings on each face giving them that 3 - dimensional look, definition: the quality of the defined
lines that are portrayed through every
painting (piece) and every small detail in the
painting (like the faces and body parts)
line: the complex and balanced
lining that is
seen in both, the abstract and realistic images in these works, texture: somewhat giving off an appealing texture to the works by the dimensions, as if you can reach out and grab the images, dimension: the realistic look that each women has (3 - dimensional), spacing: the space is used wisely in each work, very nicely spread out adding to its originality, touch: the clear and powerful finishing touch that every piece has, and the most visible that is
seen in every piece here, is simply life.
I
saw a show of his, probably in 1975, at the Whitney Museum of American Art and in that show I
saw a piece that was probably 8 feet long and 5 feet tall and, basically, it was a
line across the middle of the
painting and the top half was sort of a dark green and the bottom was kind of a pearly grey.
Direct drawing, calligraphic use of
line, the effects of brushed, splattered, stained, squeegeed, poured, and splashed
paint superficially resemble the effects
seen in Abstract Expressionism and Color Field
Painting.
Revisiting an idea he first employed in his late - seventies project «128 Photographs of a
Painting», he divided the work's surface into two vertical sections, then halved those halves, and so on, he had each work printed to his desired scale, so that we might contemplate what have become remarkable horizontal, rhythmic fields of fine
lines, oscillating with vibrations of color, the largest of which stretches over ten meters, as
seen on the gallery's first floor.
Becky Yazdan's small
paintings have become incrementally more abstract over the four years or so since I first
saw her work, but they remain anchored by precise composition, balanced
line, and subtle choice of color.
The point of departure for the exhibition is a particular shade of violet that all three artists coincidentally found themselves using, with this coincidence inspiring an interest in
seeing their work side by side, to draw a
line between their practices and their innovative approaches to
painting.
It is miraculous, for instance, to
see the infinite number of variations that are sprouting from just simply
painting rectangles and

You've
seen them — those
paintings where part of the canvas is still bare, except for perhaps a
line drawing showing what the artist was going to put there.
Extending the post-painterly abstract techniques of pouring and staining, Saccoccio creates skeins of crisscrossing drip
lines, often adding pure dry pigment to the wet
paint, imbuing them with colors not normally
seen in daily life.
But an appealing handmade quality also emerges, as you start to
see that there are
painted lines extending, connecting to, or snaking among the printed ones.
Other shock tactics are used: emptiness (large canvases
painted a solid color, with a thin
line running down the side), pornography and scatology, lack of
painting technique, or abstract non-representation carried to an extreme (
see page 57).
Not
lines and not brushstrokes with any overly aggressive verve, Hughes's upright shafts of color replace the struggle that you
see in so much abstract
painting with an exuberance that seems soft and effortless.
