In advance of releasing its full budget proposal, Senate Republicans released a plan Wednesday saying they would like to
see average teacher pay top $ 54,000 in the next two years.

But when members of another random subgroup were first told the
average teacher salary in their state, only 41 % wanted to hand out
pay raises (
see Figure 11b).
According to statistics from the nonpartisan Fiscal Research staff at the General Assembly,
teachers saw an
average 8 percent
pay raise in 2006 - 07, an
average 5 percent raise in 2007 - 08, and an
average 3 percent raise in 2008 - 09.
If additional funds are not provided by the state, then it is highly likely that to
pay for an increase in
average salary, some
teachers would receive an increase while others would not, and some positions could actually
see a decrease in salary.
