We will not
see eBook piracy become a huge deal anytime this year, but Publishers and Authors have to embrace eBooks and recognize that people have many different devices, and do not want to be locked down to an exclusive device.
I expect to
see eBook piracy failing quite significently in 2012 when the lending services gets more exposure and matures.

This copying of physical books into digital formats for resale through
piracy websites is a clear indication that the crime is rampant, but also that «security blanket» measures like DRM - encryption only stop honest people from using their legally purchased
ebooks in the way that they
see fit and best suits their reading needs.
S&S provides weekly sales reports to their authors so I can
see how many books I've sold (
ebook or print) and also who sold them (indie bookstore versus chain versus places like Costco etc) They also have a great service to tackle
piracy (a huge prob with
ebooks).
Most
ebook piracy can not even be
seen as lost sales or revenue, since it assumes that many who do would have paid for it otherwise, or that they even read the book or plan to.
We can probably soon
see some steps by the Author's Guild lobbying publishers and the media that
eBook piracy is taking away valuable income from the authors.
And
ebooks, like movies, will
see that the longer the delay in international releases, the more you encourage
piracy.
It is high time that the millions of people who patronize
ebook piracy see this issue from the perspective of the most affected and understand the impact of their actions.
I suspect we'll
see many such disconnects as books become full - fledged digital objects and applications — books that literally can't be read in certain countries, subpoenas on the pages people read, books that mysteriously drop content for some legal reason, books with viruses, books that die when a company dies, social books that abuse your expectations in some ways, not to mention rampant
ebook piracy, unauthorized edits of a book, etc..
Without DRM, you would probably
see more
ebook piracy.
It remains to be
seen if Digimarc's digital watermark DRM will have any impact at all on
ebook piracy.
