Presented through all of MUMA's recently designed
galleries, the inaugural exhibition

With a vast and varied portfolio that has
seen him represent Canada at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and
present a solo exhibition at Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (which runs until 1 February), Altmejd's latest exhibition at Modern Art, his fourth show with the London - based
gallery, is dedicated to what he calls portraits.
With so much to
see, and so thoughtfully
presented, the challenge was to pause long enough to make the acquaintance of new

presenting Jana Schroeder.
Even when they featured the work of a single artist — mimicking the one - person shows viewers are used to
seeing in
galleries, as in the Frame section of Frieze, devoted to new
galleries presenting individual artists — the hangings were thrown together in a way that never would have been countenanced in a
gallery.
The festival, on view until the 2 October,
sees myriad Japanese artists,
galleries, bookstores and publishers
present a range of work both historical and contemporary.
First - time exhibitors include: Dépendance featuring drawings, sculpture, painting and film by Ed Atkins (b. 1982), Gillian Carnegie (b. 1971) and Peter Wächtler (b. 1979); David Lewis
Gallery presenting works by Dawn Kasper (b. 1977) and Lucy Dodd (b. 1981); and Tyler Rollins Fine Art staging a never - before -
seen installation by Manuel Ocampo (b. 1965) reflecting on current global political events.
Honor Fraser will recreate a 1981 installation of unique artist books by Alexis Smith (b. 1949), which will be exhibited for the first time in decades, while Simone Subal
Gallery will
present rarely
seen sculptures, paintings and drawings by Irish artist and writer Brian O'Doherty (b. 1928).
Gallery SoSo will
present a suite of meditative paintings by Kim Eull (b. 1954 Goheung), a highly respected artist in South Korea whose works have rarely been
seen outside that country.
The
gallery is also pleased to
present work by several New York artists whose work has not been
seen in LA
galleries in recent years — Chuck Agro, Larry Mantello, Mira Schor, Susan Silas and Amy Yoes.
Unfortunately, the age of these pieces combined with the nature of fabrication preclude the
Gallery from
presenting the pieces as they were intended to be
seen as one of the lending conditions was that the tables not be filled with liquid of any kind.
The San Francisco
gallery Altman Siegel will
present new abstract paintings by local San Francisco artist, Liam Everett, and never - before -
seen watercolors by Milton Avery will be on view from Yares Art, alongside major paintings by the influential artist.
