There are new levels like Studiopolis which also have many
references to other Sonic and Sega
games, so you can
see the outpouring of love for all things Sonic and Sega.
You will be playing the
game through three different perspectives — these are three story arcs which can be selected on the main menu and should technically be played as chapter one of each story, then chapter two, then chapter three... It isn't mandatory
to do this and you can play a story through entirely first, but each chapter
references or is intertwined with the
other chapters, a bit like the Danganronpa 3 anime if you have
seen that.

Further complicating things is the fact that there are various factions within the Darkness that are not above shooting at each
other and it's never quite clear why, and the
game has a love of bombastic dialog filled with
references to things that make you feel like you're watching the third movie in a trilogy without having
seen the first two films.

seen how fairness isn't the only deciding factor
to whether a good
game lives or dies (for those waiting for the obligatory City Of Heroes or Star Wars Galaxies
reference, here ya go), I understand your concerns.
BFG: The most obvious
reference to come
to mind is Metal Slug, but we also have points in common with
other games, like Left 4 Dead in respect
to 4 - player coop against swarms of fodder with some stronger enemies mixed in, procedural loot comparable
to Diablo or Borderlands, and layered level generation as can be
seen in The Binding of Isaac.
There's some enjoyment and tongue in cheek
references to other games in the dialogue, such as Modern Sonic exclaiming that «It's been Generations» since he's
seen Classic Sonic, upon his eventual rescue.
