It's important for

To make independent reading worthy
of class time, it must include instruction and coaching from the
teacher on text selection and reading strategies, feedback to students on their reading, and text discussion or other post-reading response activities (for
example, Kamil, 2008; Reutzel, Fawson, & Smith, 2008;
see Miller & Moss, 2013 for extensive guidance on supporting independent reading).

Here are some
examples of creative ways that we've
seen teachers use games for assessment.
• Make it a «non-negotiable» • Recruit and hire
teachers who buy - in from the get - go • Provide them with hands - on professional development and plenty
of examples • Share and celebrate «best practices» • Identify
teachers who do it well and have others visit their classrooms • Give instructional teams time to collaborate and to develop quality prompts • Stockpile successful A.R.T. plans and incorporate them into the school's curriculum map • Hire and / or bring in practicing artists to participate • And, most importantly, get excited - as though you had just
seen a narwhal tusk for the first time!
We could
see whether
teachers whose students make the largest gains really do make greater use
of the concrete practices that Doug Lemov describes in Teach Like a Champion, for
example.

example of seeing how development is important to the entire school community — students,
teachers, founders, everyone — as a means
of better meeting their commitment to kids, families, and communities,» he said.
