Never in a million years were we going to
see forty - five states truly embrace these rigorous academic expectations for their students,
teachers, and schools, meet all the implementation challenges (curriculum, textbooks, technology,
teacher prep, etc.), deploy
new assessments, install the results of those assessments in their accountability systems, and live
with the consequences of zillions of kids who, at least in the near term, fail to clear the higher bar.
In the elementary grades 3 through 5, students of
new Teach for America
teachers gained an average of 5.8 percent of a standard deviation more on the TAAS reading exam than did students
with other
new teachers, a difference that fell just short of statistical significance (
see Figure 2).
When I
see professionals like Colin Hegarty, a
teacher nominated for the international Varkey Foundation Award for his ground breaking approach to teaching maths; and Luke Sparkes, Principal at Dixons Trinity Academy in Bradford whose focus is on seeking out what pupils don't know rather than affirming what they do, I know that the teaching profession is fizzing
with bright
new ideas as well as passionate
teachers and leaders who are committed to driving up educational outcomes.
The idea here is to let
teachers get into each other's classrooms to
see innovation happening, and the goal There is lots written about looking and student work and instructional rounds, and we can share resources
with you, but the main ideas here is that we need to help teams that are engaged in
new practices figure out how to make sense of them.

new pay plan has many heads spinning,
with teachers working hard to figure out what they will actually earn for the upcoming year, and some even wondering if they stand to

Survey
teachers about the design elements they'd like to
see in a
new school, and work
with an architect who is willing to engage
with teachers about how they teach and what they need in instructional space to get their job done.
My observations are heavily influenced by my 20 - plus years working in urban education, but I've
seen new teachers in suburban and private schools dealing
with these same challenges, perhaps
with different degrees of intensity.
As
seen in this study, Twitter's capacity to connect preservice
teachers to
new and diverse ideas and people recommends it as a social networking platform
with real educational applications and potential.
Such online professional development approaches were found to provide effective
teacher support for the adoption of
new curriculum
with geospatial technologies in science classrooms (e.g.,
see Fishman et al., 2013; McAuliffe & Lockwood, 2014; Moore, Haviland, Whitmer, & Brady, 2014) and can promote science
teachers» pedagogical design capacity for effective instructional enactment (Bodzin et al., 2012).
The Chapel Hill - Carrboro City Schools already offer higher salaries to
teachers with 25 years of experience, but
new teachers also could
see a boost in pay if they agree to additional duties or participate in extra professional development.
While many states have been working on changes to licensure structures and have been involved in data analysis regarding the
teacher pipeline, one of UPTEP's
new goals includes a focus on preparing all
teachers to teach students
with special needs, something not
seen in other states.
