If the National Highway Trafffic
Safety Administration has its way, the
auto industry will be forced to install rear shoulder belts not only on passenger cars but on many rear - outboard seats in trucks, multipurpose vehicles and light buses. The companies that
seem likely to be most affected are Chrysler Motors, Ford, Nissan and Suzuki. The NHTSA is considering a rule to require rear shoulder belts for 1990 passenger cars, except convertibles, and 1992 convertibles, trucks, multipurpose vehicles and light buses.
