You may not have known that these plants are known as
foxtails, but you've probably
seen them.
These are hard seed - bearing structures of grasses that have sharp points at one end, which can easily get imbedded in the fur, paws, ears, eyes, nostrils, and we have even
seen cases with
foxtails inside the mouth!
The reason why you might
see some with docked tails is because ranchers that own these dogs didn't want them to get infected from
foxtails and other brush ailments.
During the examination, the veterinarian may also
see foreign objects such as
foxtails in the ear canal.
Foxtails embedded in the skin can burrow underneath and leave draining areas of infection — we
see these commonly in between the toes, and owners usually notice dogs licking at their feet and discharge from the affected area.
