in our assessment of the films we drop our cash on and park our asses

dark theater for two
hours to
see.
It's a great year,
in fact, for UK filmmakers with Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards, Joe Wright for
Darkest Hour (could
see a boost for that as well), but especially Christopher Nolan.
While we have yet to
see any unbelievable leaps
in setting
in the early
hours of
Darks Souls 3, we were also surprised to discover that the world isn't a huge, continuously connected thing.
The Swedish - born Kinnaman has recently been
seen in David Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and unfortunately the dismal sci - fi flop, THE
DARKEST HOUR.
James will next be
seen in Edgar Wright's Baby Driver (out 17 March) and is preparing to work on Winston Churchill pic

Darkest Hour in January, and then
in Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One
in 2019 as Nolan Sorrento.
It may not be Wright's best film (that honor likely goes to Atonement) nor is it his most exciting (I'm a huge Hannah stan personally) and it's very far from his lower - tier material (The Soloist, Pan) but
Darkest Hour sees the English auteur flexing his muscles
in new and exciting ways, turning historical nonfiction into a calculated character study, an intoxicating courtroom drama and an electrifying thriller
in its own right.
Thoughts of Lady Soames and her famous father filled my head
in October as I fell asleep
in my room at the Loganberry Inn
in Fulton, Mo., just after I had
seen the Midwest premiere of «
Darkest Hour,» starring Gary Oldman as Churchill.
And I'd be almost as pleased to
see «Dunkirk,» «
Darkest Hour» or «Three Billboards»
in the winner's circle.
And Joe Wright is nominated because... well, I enjoyed «
Darkest Hour» as much as or more than any film I
saw in 2017.
The 2018 EE British Academy Film Awards
see The Shape of Water lead the nominations
in 12 categories, while
Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri follow with nine nods.
As for
Darkest Hour, it is hard to
see how anyone but Oldman can get the Bafta now, although Day Lewis's performance is I think more interesting, and he himself is arguably rivalled
in screen presence by Daniel Kaluuya who was so brilliant
in Get Out, that terrifically smart, pugnacious and relevant satire on post-Obama America.

Darkest Hour» won him Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor
in a Leading Role and Allison Janney's turn
in «I, Tonya»
saw her awarded Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor
in a Supporting Role.
Or...) Perhaps there's Churchill fatigue right now (
see also: The Crown), but Oldman's performance
in The
Darkest Hour failed to generate the same electric enthusiasm as, say, Timothée Chalamet's
in Call Me By Your Name or Daniel Kaluuya's
in Get Out.
With Oscars on Sunday, moviegoers will definitely make a point about
seeing this year's crop of best picture nominees specifically those still
in theaters, read The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; The Post, Call Me By Your Name,
Darkest Hour, Lady Bird, and Phantom Thread.
If you have
seen recent films Dunkirk or
Darkest Hour, you'd be forgiven for thinking that World War II was a struggle
in which half the human race was missing.
Oldman can currently be
seen alongside Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James
in «The
Darkest Hour» as World War II British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and at the weekend he won the Best Performance by an Actor
in a Motion Picture, Drama prize at the Golden Globes and he has also been nominated for the Leading Actor gong at this year's BAFTA Film Awards.
For example, of all the movies out now, if I were a consumer, I'd have definitely gone to
see «
Darkest Hour» and probably would have
seen «I, Tonya,»
in each case, because of the subject.
On the other hand, Working Title's «
Darkest Hour,» which I
saw at Telluride, is a series of talky dramatic sequences
in which new Prime Minister Churchill (Gary Oldman), supported by his wife (Kristin Scott Thomas), must take on the fight against the Nazis who are swiftly conquering Europe and cornering some 400,000 Allied forces
in Dunkirk.
If you looked up the definition of «Oscar Bait»
in the dictionary, you just might
see a picture of Gary Oldman
in Darkest Hour, covered
in makeup and prosthetics and a fat suit to play the portly Winston Churchill.

In a year with
Darkest Hour, The Lost City of Z, and Battle of the Sexes, I, Tonya is 2017's must -
see biopic.
But since the evacuation of the 338,000 men across the English Channel isn't really depicted
in Darkest Hour, the two movies don't so much compete directly
in terms of telling a story — but they do enhance and compliment each other and make a terrific double feature
seen back - to - back.
While the vilified Chamberlain gets an unusually sympathetic portrayal
