Many established researchers hiked the number of grants they receive and the number of scientists working
in their labs, but newer investigators
saw virtually no rise
in funding through the Research Project Grant Program (R01) grants considered crucial to establishing an independent
scientific career, Stephan found.
«To start a
scientific career is very challenging, and the returns are not very good,» says Rahul Sharma, a research instructor at the University of Virginia
in Charlottesville, who
sees his promotion opportunities and job satisfaction as very poor.
This phenomenon needs to be understood by individuals, academic institutions, companies, and federal agencies who claim that they want to
see the numbers of women and minorities going into science and engineering
careers increase, because unfortunately «stereotype threat» is alive and well
in the
scientific community.
«If I were going to hire somebody,» Shepherd says, «I'd certainly look to
see if they'd been involved
in leading a program or if they were involved
in a program for training» during their
scientific career.
She also
saw her
career reduced to ashes as she struggled against sexism
in the Iranian
scientific establishment.
She wanted to be part of the changes she was
seeing — or at least hoped she was
seeing —
in the Polish
scientific community, even if it meant taking on some
career - related risk.
Like Maisano and Pitcher, Usher
sees the Jupiter scene
in Cymbeline as a response to Galileo's discovery — but he takes «Shakespearian science» much further, arguing that examples of the playwright's
scientific knowledge can be found
in works spanning his entire
career.
