The purpose
of a kindergarten screening is not to test how much your child knows, so much as to
see if your child is developmentally ready to start kindergarten and if a child will need any additional support
in the
classroom.
All
of what I envision — the shiny
classrooms, piles
of books, and endless snack supply — lies
in stark contrast to what I'm
seeing on the ground
in Ethiopia, whether at traditional schools or at the Population Council's safe learning spaces for girls suffering
in urban slums.
I have
seen students enthusiastically eating all sorts
of healthy options, especially where they have first encountered the foods
in a school garden or
classroom cooking demonstration, helped to plant or harvest the vegetables or even met the farmer growing their greens.
Much
of my research was done
in a school setting, and some
of the most effective programs that I've
seen are the ones that develop community within a
classroom or within a whole school.

I also
saw the amazing confidence
of children who started school with a strong foundation
of skills, and how that confidence fueled their success

Along with other stakeholders we were fortunate to experience the energy and excitement
of #NSBW18 ourselves, and to
see the direct impact
of our breakfast -

in districts around the state.
When we change from traditional universal free breakfast to universal free
classroom breakfast we
see a 300 to 500 % increase
in participation at that school because we have removed several barriers to participation including the stigma
of the free and reduced meal program, students who arrive at school just before the bell or who would rather play and socialize during the traditional before school breakfast period.
