A job interview is not the time to throw in «a guy walks into a bar» types of jokes or use off - color language, but being able to laugh at our own mistakes or the truly outrageous things we've
seen middle grades students do will go a long way toward easing your stress and making them see you won't overreact to an everyday situation.

At Baltimore's Thomas Jefferson Elementary
Middle, third -

see embryos form, and thrilled to observe the growing life forms under a microscope.

middle school does not alter the basic patterns of graduation and college attendance
seen in the descriptive comparisons.
In the New York City schools we studied, the average cohort size was 75
students in K — 8 schools, 100
students in K — 5 and K — 6 schools, and over 200
students in
middle schools for
grades 6 — 8 and 7 — 8 (
see Figure 3).
They also tend to be larger and have many more
students per
grade than elementary school (
see «The
Middle School Mess,» features).
I am drawn to Gardner's work because I
see clearly the value of using a wide variety of methods to cultivate my
middle -
grades students» comprehension of the content I teach.
But the comparison is imperfect because Democracy Prep started as a
middle school, while Success is just now starting to
see significant numbers of
students in those
grades.
And while building these basic skills is not the only job of our K — 12 system — or even of our elementary and
middle schools, whose
students» performance is what we'll
see in forthcoming fourth
grade and eighth
grade results — they are surely at the center of the enterprise.
Although the math achievement of
students who entered
middle school in 7th
grade improves by 0.05 standard deviations in 9th
grade relative to
students who attended K — 8 schools, the same pattern is not evident in reading or in either subject for the much larger group of
students who entered
middle school in 6th
grade (
see Figure 2).
At Parkland Magnet
Middle School for Aerospace Technology on April 18, Mr. Bush watched a 6th
grade class use robotic arms to pick up balls,
saw students using technology to trace sunspots, and observed scientists from the space agency guiding
students» studies.
Kevin Griffin, who teaches 7th
grade Language Arts at Anne Simpson Davis
Middle School in Dublin, has
seen firsthand how far behind former ECOT
students can fall.
Since 2006, according to an analysis of state testing data by the city's Department of Education (which used 2010's recalibrated proficiency levels to compare 2006's testing data to 2010's), the city's elementary and
middle schools have
seen a 22 - point increase in the percentage of
students at or above
grade level in math (to 54 percent) and a 6 - point increase in English (to 42 percent).
The
Middle School has also charged the
students with graphing their data on the
grade level pictograph displayed for the school to
see using anonymous data.
And it shows — one eighth
grade student noted how much STEM coursework was available, including courses not typically
seen in
middle schools.

«As a classroom teacher myself — first teaching high school
students in the juvenile justice system, then
middle school, then third

seen the amazing changes that happened when
students were asked to think for themselves instead of sitting passively while their teacher «delivered» instruction.
For example, Westside Academy, the Syracuse
middle school where no
students passed the state eighth -
grade math assessment, has has had multiple principals and
saw 44 - percent teacher turnover in the 2012 - 2013 school year.
As a former eighth
grade English teacher, he
saw first - hand that many gifted
students who hadn't been reclassified as proficient English speakers before
middle school were sidetracked into remedial classes where they soon became bored, frustrated, and at higher risk of dropping out.
By the time a
student moves into the
middle grades, the emphasis is on on discipline specific reading materials, as
seen in the recommendation by the English Language Arts (ELA) Common Core State Standards in Literacy (Key Design Considerations).
Middle and high school

saw a new tab on their screens, near where their attendance and
grades had always been.
