While those who enjoyed the Brooks book will likely be chagrined at
seeing little of what they enjoyed show up
on the big screen,
taking World War Z
on its own terms as a Hollywood blockbuster, there's still enough entertainment value to be had for those who are OK with the fact that the
film doesn't represent the book.
It's best to go into this
film without any expectations, without any idea what you're about to
see, and let it
take you
on a ride.
But these are esoteric points of interest that will intrigue mostly those who've
seen too many
films in their life and actively seek out strange and opaque
takes on familiar subject matter.
When we go into a
film of this sort, we expect to
see White People Behaving Badly, but to view an African - American who shows such antagonism toward his own people, it becomes a more startling sight — and it must be tougher for an actor to
take on such a part.
This is the first
film I have ever
seen that
takes on sexual coercion in a head
on fashion.

99 Homes is a
film written and directed by Ramin Bahrani (Goodbye Solo, Man Push Cart) that comments
on the events following the collapse that occurred after the housing crisis
took place in the United States that
saw many families evicted from their homes.
The perpetually versatile Moore, soon to be
seen as the title character's frightening momma in Kimberley Pierce's new
take on «Carrie», is said to be merely «in talks» at this stage (but she's not known to be too picky; one of her last
films was that awful «6 Souls» movie).
I marvel at his Thomas Hardy adaptations — the devastating Jude and the redemptive The Claim (his
take on The Mayor of Casterbridge)-- and I hadn't thought, before I actually
saw him do it, that anyone but Charlie Kaufman would have a shot at turning Tristram Shandy into a viable

take you back to a simpler time: the»90s, where now - famous actors were
on their rise to fame, and an iconic teen story that endures as a must -
see film for a generation first got its start.
«The Lobster» (2015) It's a little unfair to put a
film on this list that most will not yet have
seen, but frankly there are not going to be many opportunities to talk up Yorgos Lanthimos «brilliant «The Lobster» that we don't
take.
Directed by David Yates, the
film's
sees Scamander and Albus Dumbledore (played by Jude Law)
take on the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).
On top of some of the most exquisite character design, facial expressions and body language you'll
see in an animated
film, several jaw - dropping flight and fight sequences and John Powell's majestic score are the grace notes that
take it from great to wondrous.
And its also nice to
see a director turn away from the modern - MTV look that so many of todays
films have and
take on a more Hitchcockian approach.

film takes its distance with Hollywood, because Melville's
film can be
seen as a reflection

film highlighting it's
take on «white trash», I'm not sure this would be the kind of music they would really listen to.

film looks to be a darker
take on Rudyard Kipling's book than we've ever
seen on screen before.
Upon entering I thought that I could very well be walking into yet another costume drama that
takes no time whatsoever to work
on an able story (i.e. Valmont), but instead I was treated to a beautifully layered
film that is probably the second best I've
seen so far this year.
It's just a matter of time, however, before the propulsive atmosphere
takes a palpable hit, as Koepp,
on several occasions, literally rewinds the clock to explore the circumstances that brought each of the characters to this point (eg we
see exactly why Bobby desperately needs that package), with this device, intriguing as it may be, wreaking havoc
on the
film's momentum and highlighting the less - than - substantial nature of the storyline.
As much flack as Bay regularly
takes and as downright bad at the Transformers
films got, it's nice to
see him get back
on track with the kind of material that is right in his wheelhouse.
On Wednesday night at Cannes, I
took the night off from
seeing foreign - language
films to settle onto the sand for a beachfront screening of Black Panther.
To be in
on the jokes, it would be better to have
seen the
film «John Wick,» but it is not necessary as they
take the time to make it it's own thing.
