Award Travel.
While we love
seeing award sales that provide solid value to consumers, it's tough to trust an airline that drastically
increases award prices then runs
award sales.
As well, some regions such as South Asia have
seen big
increased on all business class
award.
While Saver level domestic first class
awards will continue to cost 25,000 miles one - way in the continental U.S. and 40,000 miles one - way to Hawaii, routes with premium service are
seeing increases.
The United
award chart
saw some
increases, but not as many or as severe as the bloodbath on the partner chart.
We are
seeing a double digit
increase in
award redemptions since January and other customer - positive
award redemption trends in terms of the average number of miles redeemed, partner
awards, and one - way
award usage.
And the
increases here are nothing like we've
seen in cases involving some of the other top first class cabins like Alaska's overnight nuking / devaluation of Emirates

If you take a look at how American Airlines have slashed the number of redeemable miles we can earn alongside the huge percentage
increases in the miles needed to redeem various
awards, you start to
see a picture of just how big this devaluation has been.
The big devaluations that Carlson put through its loyalty program last year
saw a very large number of properties
increase in
award night cost — specifically from 50,000 to 70,000 Gold Points per night.
Ironically while it's the First Class
awards which have
seen the biggest
increases in miles required, they are also the
awards that probably matter the least.
We've certainly
seen a lot of devaluation lately with nearly 100 %
increases to the Hilton HHonors
award chart, some adjustments to Cash + Points
awards from SPG, and the hit to airline mile transfers from Club Carlson.
Once again it's the Europe - Hawaii route that
sees the biggest hit with an incredible 40 %
increase in the number of AAdvantage miles needed for a Business Class
award.
The Marriott Rewards chart is mostly linear in nature — the cost of an
award night goes up in cost by 5,000 points per category (between Cat 1 and Cat 2 the
increase is smaller)-- so, unlike Starwood's chart, there are no specific category moves which would
see a property's
award cost go up or down by more than another's.
UK - based flyers will
see an incredible 72 %
increase in the cost of a Delta One
award to the west coast if they now wish to travel on dates in the newly introduced Peak Season while US - based flyers will be expected to pay 55 % more for a Delta One
award to the UK / Europe.
UK - based flyers will
see a 50 %
increase in
award costs when booking Delta One flights to the West Coast while US flyers based on the West Coast
see a 35 %
increase in the cost of a Delta One
award to the UK / Europe.

We've
seen the number of miles that we need to book
award travel
increase significantly, we've
seen the number of miles we earn for travel plummet and we've
seen American Airlines introduce minimum spend criteria for elite status... but the number of miles you need to upgrade your flights has, miraculously, remained unchanged.
Most Economy Class flyers are
seeing no
increase in their mileage earnings and yet will have to deal with
award cost
increases of up to 72 % (ouch) while those who earn most of their miles from shopping or credit card churning will also suffer in the same way.
While it's normal for hotel programs to change their prices on a an annual basis, it's not very common to
see a higher ceiling on
awards along with so many price
increases and that's why this is big news.
I also don't like to
see the ceiling for
awards increasing as other programs such as Hilton Honors have pledged a cap for their top properties at 95,000 (at least for the time being).
Most destinations from the west coast to Paris (CDG) or Amsterdam (AMS) will also
see a substantial
increase of 8,500 to 9,500 miles for business class
awards which means
awards that were previously 62,500 miles will be 71,000 or 72,000 miles.
Long haul travel to Europe, Japan and Korea, the United States, Eastern Australia, and New Zealand will
see addition
award costs
increase by 5 - 15 %.
I was bummed to
see the
increase in off peak
awards to Europe, but at least it wasn't a huge
increase.
With these
award chart changes we're
seeing the cost of business class between the US and Asia 2
increase by 15,000 miles.
The above are just eight examples of
award price
increases we're
seeing for some of my favorite
award types.
It's also good to
see them
increasing the number of saver
awards available.

awards including low - level
awards in first class to Hawaii (up 5K from 85,000 to 90,000 miles) and business class to the South Asian subcontinent (up 20K from 120,000 to 140,000 miles) and in low - level economy to Hawaii (up 5k from 40,000 to 45,000 miles), the Middle East (80,000 to 85,000 miles), and the South Asian subcontinent (80,000 to 85,000 miles).
