The product of months of careful planning by curator Cynthia Burlingham, exhibition designer Peter Gould, and colorist Scott Flax, along with a dedicated team of Hammer staff, the new installation situates this diverse selection of works within galleries that seamlessly combine contemporary and historical elements.
In addition to a 2008 solo exhibition, the gallery has featured his work in several major group exhibitions, including: Aspects of American Abstraction, 1930 - 1942 (1993), Defining the Edge: Early American Abstraction, Selections from the Collection of Dr. Peter B. Fischer (1998), Organic New York, 1941 - 1949 (2005), and two major surveys of abstract expressionism and surrealism, in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

This richly illustrated book contains essays on the intersections between art and magic by Jonathan Allen and Sally O'Reilly; texts on each of the 24 featured artists; new writing on the cultural history of magic by Simon During, Brigitte Felderer, Peter Lamont, Pierre Taillefer, Helen Varola and Marina Warner; a fold - out collation of texts and images exploring the dynamics of magic, art and power; and an illustrated selection of props and offbeat ephemera from the world of theatrical magic.
Featuring a selection of American vernacular photographs recently donated to the Museum by New York collector Peter Cohen, this exhibition explores how amateur photographers circumvented and at times unsettled assumptions about what a portrait might be.
