sensitive survey will reach objects at least 10 times fainter than the all -
sky survey.
Meanwhile, the fourth telescope will continually point away from the Sun and conduct a more
sensitive survey of a part of the
sky along the plane of the Earth's orbit.
Two
sensitive surveys of broad patches of the
sky have now peered through that clutter to expose a procession of stars beyond the disk, embracing the galaxy in a torus about 120,000 light - years wide.
A position -
sensitive proportional counter made it possible to
survey the
sky at X-ray wavelengths and produced a catalog of more than 150,000 sources with a positional accuracy of better than 30 arc seconds.
Sensitive radio and X-ray
surveys covering large regions of the
sky will need to be performed to uncover more of this missing population.
The NVSS is expected to produce a catalog of more than two million radio - emitting objects in the
sky, and it is the first
sky survey sensitive to linearly polarized emission from radio sources beyond our own Milky Way galaxy.
Dr Alexander explained the importance of this new development: «The SKA will be 100 times more
sensitive than the radio telescopes of the present generation, and will be able to
survey the
sky up to one million times faster.
The group is also working with Paul Horowitz, a physicist and electrical engineer at Harvard, to develop «all
sky all the time optical SETI
survey systems» where the ATA would perform wide
surveys of the
sky while other, more
sensitive telescopes — like the Lick — would follow up with more focused
surveys covering a smaller portion of
sky.
