Neurologic or
sensorineural deafness is caused by abnormalities of the inner ear, auditory nerve or in the brain itself.
There are over 35 breeds of dogs reported to have hereditary
sensorineural deafness.
Deafness in dogs can result from many causes (aging, drug toxicity, noise, infection, trauma), but the cause of significant concern to owners of Catahoulas and other similarly affected breeds is congenital
sensorineural deafness, because it appears to be inherited.

However, there can be a high incidence of
sensorineural deafness in Boston Terriers.
