In 1971 Vito Acconci made an edition of
prints while in residence at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design titled Kiss Off, which index a
series of actions: after applying lipstick and kissing his own body, Acconci would rub his
pigmented flesh on a lithography stone, using his body as a stamp.
In Iruka (
pigment and acrylic on birch panels with liquid polymer, 2013), for example, the artist manipulates the digital elements so that they take on a configuration and sense of organic power that is strikingly similar to the effect of the ocean waves in Hokusai's seminal
print The Great Wave off Kanegawa from the
series 36 Views of Mount Fuji.
Since 2012, Magnolia Editions has published an ongoing
series of archival watercolor
prints by Close which use the artist's grid format and the precision afforded by contemporary digital printers to layer water - based
pigment on Hahnemuhle rag paper [31] such that the native behavior of watercolor is manifested in each
print: «The edges of each pixel bleed with cyan, magenta, and yellow, creating a kind of three - dimensional fog effect behind the intended color swatches.»
