Editors offer all kinds
of services - everything from proofreading (fixing commas and spelling) to copy editing (fixing some
of the writing itself) to
developmental editing (evaluating the entire project and making major recommendations regarding the structure, plot, etc.).
I'm often asked about my role as a
developmental editor — what I do, why it matters, and if this
service includes other forms
of editing such as proofreading and line editing, or even substantive editing.
Our
developmental editing
services pair you with experienced
developmental editors, writing teachers, and industry insiders to help you craft a book that reaches its fullest potential and has the best chance
of success in the marketplace.
Some
editors will combine
services, but usually
developmental editing is not one
of them.
I can only assume that the
editors at such
services spend the same amount
of time on each writer's book, regardless
of whether the manuscript needs proofreading or a heavy
developmental edit.
(Full disclosure, I do provide
developmental editing
services, but this is not a pitch for business... these are opinions I've come to after years
of working in publishing, both as a writer and an
editor.)
