setting, Little Miss Sunshine, with its
dysfunctional family anchored by the dryly quirky paternal Alan Arkin (Firewall, Thirteen Conversations About One Thing).

of a violent fantasy world — is as King as it gets.

Back at home for the funeral, he is reunited with his industrious older brother Paul (Corey Stoll, House
of Cards), buttoned up married sister Wendy (Tina Fey, 30 Rock) and flaky, self - involved younger brother Philip (Adam Driver, Girls)-- all under the imperious eye
of pop psychologist / author mother, Hilary (Jane Fonda), whose new
set of boobs only adds to the
dysfunctional family's impending group breakdown.
Besides the aforementioned Thompson ties, it fuses Dali surrealism, film noir (Beatty's corrupt mayor is modeled on John Huston's character in «Chinatown»), «Don Quixote» (for Alfred Molina's quixotic armadillo) «Star Wars» and «Apocalypse Now» (for a batty canyon chase
set to «Ride
of the Valkyries»), Peckinpah's «Ride the High Country» (for the
dysfunctional family of mole varmints), and, most notably, Sergio Leone's famously over-the-top Westerns.
Even better is the return
of the guttural sound
of The Blaster Beam, Craig Huxley's instrument so familiar to fans
of «Star Trek: The Motion Picture» and «Dreamscape,» Given that much
of the action is driven by dialogue and character, It says something about Trachtenberg's confidence in McCreary's musical storytelling ability that the whole opening plays only with score with score,
setting up a highly
dysfunctional nuclear
family, locked in by doomsday.

of narrator augmented by the juxtaposition
of Milo's superhuman intelligence and his addiction.
In retrospect, it is no surprise that during my return flight I struggled to enter the world
of Tell the Wolves I'm Home, Carol Rifka Blunt's debut
set within a stilted,
dysfunctional family household.
