Finally, I baked it in the heart -
shaped pan my grandmother once gave to me, and whipped up a simple orange glaze to enhance the flavor
of the
cake even further.
I contemplated baking a couple
of long lattice pieces along the outside
of a
cake ring placed onto a sheet
pan, but I worried that the lattice would lose its
shape as it baked and not look so pretty.
The
cake had the
shape of a turban, which is similar to today's Gugelhupf
pans.
Usually a gugelhupf is a yeasted
cake but today the name refers only to the
shape of the
pan.

I also used an 8 inch
cake pan and it puffed up quite a bit, making it sort
of odd
shaped.
Then, instead
of baking round
cakes, I used square
pans to create four rectangular layers, which, piled one on top
of another with all that icing,
shaped the
cake into a log like my family's favorite
cake at Thanksgiving, a frozen chocolate and coffee mousse.

I also used a loaf
pan instead
of the round
cake pan so that the
shape would be more manageable for sandwiches and toasting and it worked perfectly.
And I agree that it's not as dark as pictured, but it's still beautiful, especially if, when you remove the
cake from the
pan after it's soaked up the sauce, you brush the surface with a silicone basting brush so that all the brush strokes align nicely with the
shape of the
cake.
I used this
cake recipe (minus the raisins and coconut) to make a
shaped cake using a
cake pan with a lot
of detail, and it worked perfectly.
To employ the tradition
of a ring

My only complaint is that I wish I had a bundt
pan, so that my honey
cake could have a magnificent
shape worthy

cake tonight, with the reduced amount
of baking powder, in a bundt
pan... and the
shape is juuuuust right!
Take a small handful and
shape into round, flat
cakes and drop into hot
pan (I use two tablespoons
of coconut oil for frying).
