Vote
shares for the four biggest
parties remain unchanged since
last week, with the Tories on 30 %, Labour on 29 %, UKIP on 16 % and the Liberal Democrats holding on to their 10 %, a result which
party president Tim Farron joked was causing champagne corks to pop
at Lib Dem HQ
last week.
Last year a Conservative mayor was elected on North Tyneside and the Tories were the only
party to increase their
share of the vote
at the general election.
My model takes into account five things: the vote
share a
party received in the by - election constituency
at the preceding general election; changes in public opinion towards the
party since the
last general election; whether the
party won the seat
at the
last election; whether the
party is in government; and whether there are «
party effects» on by - election outcomes.
Ever since
last autumn a number of polls have been suggesting that the Tories were enjoying a modest but noticeable advance, with some companies putting the
party at a record high
share.
These reservations are
shared widely in the Liberal Democrat
Party, and have given rise to separate reports that Business Secretary, Vince Cable, who is a former member of the Labour
Party, was deeply unhappy
at the time of the deal being struck and made
last ditch appeals to outgoing Prime Minister Gordon Brown in an attempt to strike a Coalition deal with Labour.
Although there may now
at least be one blue patch on the political map of Scotland, the fact that the
party's
share of the vote was even lower
last month,
at 16.7 %, than it was 13 years ago, is a cause for deep concern.
Overall, the shift away from the two main
parties continues, with the Tories falling back on
last month by two points, leaving the combined
share of the vote for the big two
parties at 63 %, its lowest ever recorded by ICM using the phone method.
The research, conducted by internet polling company Survation, suggested that the longstanding link between ethnic minorities and the Labour
party was fraying, and that the Conservatives might
at last be breaking through with minority voters, having achieved a 33 %
share of the 2015 ethnic minority vote overall or «one million» new voters for the
party, and with a lead over Labour among Hindu voters.
With the BBC calculating Labour's projected national
share at 23 %, that puts the
party another per cent lower than its historic low from
last year.
The «other»
share of the vote is down to 10 %, and has consistently fallen in the
last few YouGov polls, down from 15 %, to 14 %, to 12 % to 10 % as the boost the minor
parties received
at the local elections has declined.
At the
last election, YouGov's eve of vote poll — which successfully predicted Labour and Tory vote
share to within 1 % — identified the Tories as the most popular
party among working class voters: 32 % of the social demographic C2DE backed the Tories, 31 % Labour and 26 % Lib Dem.
