One very pleasant surprise is that state officials, who are instrumental in
passing important legislation (our panel included discussions of
shark finning bans, puppy mill legislation, outlawing pigeon shoots, protections for companion animals, and the intensive confinement of pigs), were extremely happy about being invited to animal events.
The federal government has the power to
pass regulations that could end the trade of
shark fin products immediately, but it needs to know that Canadians still care about this issue.
On December 7, the US Congress
passes the
Shark Finning Prohibition Act (H.R. 5461) by unanimous consent.
New York, one of the largest markets for
shark fins outside of Asia, recently joined seven other U.S. states in
passing laws that ban the possession, sale, and trade of
shark fins.
This Resolution was
passed after 423 MEPs signed Written Declaration 71/2010 on strengthening the EU ban on
shark finning.
Taking effect on July 1, 2014, law A. 1769b / S.1711 b was
passed to ban the possession, sale, trade and distribution of
shark fins in New York.
The bill still has to
pass the Senate in order to ban
shark fins from stores and restaurants, but it does not come without a hearty debate, none of which makes a lot of sense.
Hopefully, the state Senate will
pass the bill and it will become law with California following Hawaii, which banned the sale of
shark fins last year.
However, will this put any pressure on California to finally
pass its own ban on
shark fins?
In a move to end the
shark fin trade within California, the state assembly
passed AB376, on a 62 - 8 vote Monday afternoon, as TreeHugger Stephen Messenger reported.
