There is evidence that climate change may increase vertical wind
shear over some regions in the western tropical Atlantic Ocean.
Furthermore, most of the CMIP3 models project increasing levels of vertical wind
shear over parts of the western tropical Atlantic (see Vecchi and Soden 2007).
Other climate changes related to greenhouse warming, such as increases in vertical wind
shear over the Caribbean, lead to fewer yet more intense hurricanes in the GFDL model projections for the late 21st century.
As Vecchi and Soden report, there is a robust increase in vertical wind
shear over a good deal of the tropical Atlantic in the collection of the 18 climate model results they examined (running SRES A1B).
If someone actually does know how the models simulated the evolution of vertical wind
shear over the Atlantic during the past 30 years, it would be very worthwhile to share that information.
The previous and present models do project the possibility of a hiatus in warming, most commonly because increased wind
shear over tropical oceans can transfer more energy into the oceans especialy during the La Nina phase of the ENSO cycle.
The observational and modeling results of the teleconnections linked to AMOC changes (including the dynamical response of vertical wind
shear over the main development region of Atlantic hurricanes) suggest an important role of the AMOC in the AMV and the multidecadal variability of the Atlantic major hurricane frequency.
El Niños generally bring increased wind
shear over the tropical Atlantic, which deters the development of tropical systems.
If so, this is one way in which global warming may end up causing a decrease in Atlantic hurricane activity over the coming decades, since the increased wind
shear over the Atlantic during El Niño events greatly reduces the number and intensity of these storms.»
If the vertical wind
shear over the Atlantic MDR is expected to increase, wouldn't we expect hurricanes to be steered farther to the east, climatologically, and therefore to pose less of a threat to most of the eastern seaboard?

shear over the US.
