For those of you unfamiliar with Companions for Heroes (C4H), they are a wonderful
and increasingly essential
group that helps match veterans, first responders, law enforcement officers
and even next of kin affected with the stress of active duty / PTSD with
shelter /
rescue dogs who would otherwise be euthanized.
The study seems to assume that
shelters are the only source of homeless dogs, when in fact
rescue groups, formal
and informal, have become an
increasingly popular option
and are finding homes for more
and more dogs.
Thinking they are saving these dogs, the public is
increasingly backing laws banning sales of pure - bred commercially sourced dogs,
and permitting only sales from animal
shelters and rescue groups.
If animal rights
groups are successful in driving responsible dog breeders out of business, Strand fears that nonprofit
shelters will turn
increasingly to sources in China, India, Egypt, Iraq
and Puerto Rico, all locales that have exported rabid
rescue dogs into the U.S. To address these issues, the NAIA is seeking changes in federal
