The most interesting point my example above illustrates is that they appear to use a formula to weight mixed - cabin
redemptions, such that adding
short -
haul economy legs radically reduces the total cost in Iberia Avios, sometimes below the cost in British Airways Avios.
However, adding a
short -
haul economy flight to a long -
haul business or first class flight may, as in my example, drastically reduce the number of Iberia Avios required for your award
redemption.
The first is
short -
haul domestic economy
redemptions.
Finally, don't forget about the great
short -
haul redemptions still found on British Airways and other discounted rates found on other airlines.
The option for
short -
haul flights at 15,000 round trip is tied with American Airlines»

haul mileage requirement but the difference is that you can use this
redemption for trips up to 1,150 miles!
25,000 miles would probably be the standard
redemption for Delta but they sometimes have specials (like right now in September 2016 where you can find cheaper
redemptions for
short -
haul routes like the 11,000 miles I found for a roundtrip from Los Angeles (LAX) to Las Vegas (LAS) or even routes as low as 10,000 roundtrip if you're able to piece it together.
It's lower
redemption rate of only 15,000 roundtrip is an excellent way to redeem for cheap and though the
short -
haul requirement is 200 miles fewer than United's requirement, it also requires 5,000 fewer miles to redeem so it balances out.
If you have to pay high fees or fuel surcharges on an economy or
short -
haul flight, you should be especially cautious about using points for that
redemption.
The best
redemption options for British Airways flights will be
short -
haul flights, domestically in the United States or abroad.
Air India Flying Returns offers one of the best
redemption for
short haul flight on United Airlines in USA.
Despite the huge devaluation that Avios underwent earlier in the year, 100,000 Avios is still a nice chunk of change and would probably be welcome to anyone flying
short -
haul routes in the continental US (no fuel surcharges and low
redemptions costs make these some of the best Avios
redemptions) but this offer is definitely not for everybody.
British Airways is great for
short -
haul flights because they're cheap and have minimal or no surcharges added; Virgin Atlantic, Air France KLM and United are good options for transatlantic flights; Korean Air has solid
redemptions to Asia, including Japan, Korea and Hong Kong; And Southwest, the largest low - cost carrier in the world, offers cheap domestic flights and only partners with Chase.
British Airways
redemptions can be good value for
short -
haul flights.
British Airways eliminated its 4,500 - Avios
redemptions, but American and Delta introduced cheaper
short -
haul awards.
This also makes these
redemptions competitive with another very popular option for booking
short haul flights, which is using British Airways Avios for nonstop flights starting at 7.5 K miles each way.
One change this year that receive a lot of attention among travel hackers was British Airways elimination of cheap
short -
haul redemptions in North America.
Yet, it has awesome
short -
haul redemptions for super cheap, awesome hotel transfers, and amazing value on long -
hauls in a bedroom for 2 - 3 people.
But, one area that has benefited travelers is the
redemption for
short -
haul flights.
As I prefer to use my Chase Ultimate Rewards points for Hyatt
redemptions Amex Membership Rewards are where I look when I ned to top up my Avios balance for
short -
haul awards within Europe or within the US.
Southwest has limited international routes, British Airways is useful for
short haul but weak for anything longer, Virgin Atlantic loves passing along super high fuel surcharges, and Korean Air promises no online partner
redemptions and a ton of hoops to jump through via phone
redemptions.
The award chart for flights on Vietnam Airlines is distance - based and has some good
redemptions for
short - and medium -
haul flights.

Overall there are still some decent
redemptions to be had for

haul flights using Avios but, once again, British Airways has removed one of the biggest sweet spots in their award chart and that doesn't endear them to me any more.
Domestic
redemptions are changing and, while not all of the city pairs are loaded into the system, it appears that
short -
haul redemptions are going down slightly — Boston (BOS) to New York (JFK) decreases from 12,500 to 11,500 Flying Blue miles in economy class and from 31,250 to 28,000 miles in first class).
To start with, you can take advantage of some of the
redemptions noted above, like British Airways
short -
haul awards, Flying Blue to Hawaii or the Caribbean, transatlantic flights on Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines first suites.
The recent devaluation to
short -
haul flight
redemptions with Avios was a pretty big hit to the program but there's still some pretty good
redemptions to be had.

Hawaiian miles can be used for great
short -
haul redemptions around the Hawaiian islands, trips from the Continental US to Hawaii, and a few other
redemptions.
And while British Airways charges a lot in fuel surcharges and fees for long -
haul flights, its
short -
haul redemptions remain valuable.
The best GarudaMiles
redemptions are for
short -
haul domestic flights on Garuda and Citilink.
Although still a good deal, British Airways utilizes a slightly different
redemption chart for
short -
haul flights that originate in the United States.
But it's not nearly enough to just allocate them some kind of uniform valuation, as some miles may be very valuable for a given type of
redemption (e.g. Avios for
short -
haul economy awards) and quite a poor value for other types of
redemptions (for Avios, ultra long -
haul in a premium cabin with high mileage cost and often high fuel surcharges).
British Airways, for example, allows
redemptions on
short -
haul flights in economy class for as few as 4,500 points one - way.
That's better than the excellent
short -
haul redemptions available using British Airways Avios.
Excellent business class service at decent
redemption rates on
short -
haul and intra-Europe flights
Some of the best include the following: United Airlines, which opens up access to the huge Star Alliance network of carriers; British Airways, offering great value on
short -
haul nonstop flights due to their distance - based award chart; Korean Airlines, with amazing award availability in their first class cabins; and Hyatt, which is widely recognized as offering some of the highest value point
redemption opportunities of any hotel chain.
Another
redemption option is with German leisure airline Condor — you can use your miles for a 30 % discount on
short -
haul flights or 20 % discount on long -
haul flights.
If all you care about doing is going from Los Angeles to San Francisco and back for as cheap as possible in economy, then by all means hoard Amex points and transfer to BA Avios to get in on those 4,500 point one way

British Airways Avios are some of the most valuable miles out there for their «sweet spot»
