Heiny has taken a circuitious route to her first novel: She had a
short story published in The New Yorker when she was only 25, wrote 25 young adult novels under a pen name and then didn't write
for almost a decade after the birth of her first
child.
Since then, Winton has written dozens of books: novels,
short -
story collections and books
for children.
As a
child I loved all the usual
children's authors, in particular an Australian writer called Paul Jennings who wrote pretty outrageous
short stories for kids that we all found shocking and hilarious.
And
for every parent who's had to drive their
children on a long trip, there's even a
short story called «Are We There Yet?»
He also won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976
for his first collection of
short stories First Love, Last Rites; the Whitbread Novel Award (1987) and Prix Fémina Etranger (1993)
for The
Child in Time; and Germany's Shakespeare Prize in 1999.
I started writing
for my
children, because they were now old enough to read, and over the course of a couple of years of false starts, created Vulcan's Kittens, a YA novel (and a bunch of
short stories, but more about those later).
