The interface is easy to use in auto mode, but you can easily access the pro functions with a quick swipe, and there are over a dozen
different shooting modes available.
You have face detection, continuous
shot mode as well as the option to control the camera with your voice.
You will find a number of software features inside of both of these devices, including
various shooting modes, and even stickers.
There are a
few shooting modes, but we do think selfie mode has been shot in the foot... a little!
You can swipe up from the bottom to
switch shooting modes, or swipe left or right to switch between photo, video and portrait mode in double - quick time.
There's also a highly capable
manual shooting mode which, with a little stabilization, can produce excellent long exposures in darker conditions.
For human
portrait shots this mode is beyond phenomenal looking, giving some seriously professional - looking portrait shots with very little effort.
In
video shooting mode there is auto focus tracking that will keep the subject focused (only in video mode) even it is moving around.
I occasionally found myself accidentally switching
between shooting modes because the settings are so easily accessible.
The camera gains the ability to adjust images in real - time and the ability to swipe to
change shooting modes.
It also offers
more shooting modes, such as one which automatically starts recording in slow - mo when movement enters a focus point.
You can take a single swipe to jump into the settings, and swiping the other direction gets you
into shooting modes.
For those who like manual control and higher quality images, and more freedom to edit afterwards, there is a
Pro shooting mode and the ability to shoot raw files.
There is however a drive up
shooting mode which slows time down and gives us some really epic looking set pieces.
The phone holds its own in daylight conditions, but it's in low -
light shooting modes where the camera truly shines.
For selfies, there is a 5MP front camera with f / 2.4 aperture and
auto shot mode.
You can also download a couple of
additional shooting modes, including rear - cam selfie (which automatically shoots photos via the rear cam once it detects faces) and sports shot.
And in brief testing, the Mate 8's 16 - megapixel camera performs reasonably well in its
regular shooting mode, too.
Aside from a slow - motion mode, there is little else by way of
extra shooting modes or even a manual mode.
The secondary lens's slower aperture also means that Portrait photos are darker than shots captured in the
default shooting mode.
There's a
speed shot mode as well as the normal mode takes time to click photos.
Its sturdy metal chassis packs a great suite of features, including an easy
panoramic shooting mode and a 5X (26 - 130 mm equivalent) zoom lens with optical image stabilization.
This kind of high - end feature is typically reserved for flagships, and it expands smartphone camera options with unique and
creative shooting modes.
Its new smart camera features allow the phone to recognize food, pets, landscapes, and then react to them by switching to the
correct shooting mode.
It looks sleek, has all the ports you need and offers
extensive shooting modes that save the camera from mediocrity if you're prepared to go manual every now and then.
There are a lot of options and settings in addition to the
major shooting modes, should you want to dig out a specific control.
Unfortunately, the real - time preview has a bit of a lag and the app doesn't support any filters or
special shooting modes.
Similar to the other phones in the current Moto line, the G4 Play features nearly the same exact camera interface — save for only the most basic of
basic shooting modes.
Manual
shooting mode translates over to the video capability, allowing you tweak the fine details before you hit record.
Aside from
new shooting modes and Android 4.3 onboard the camera interface, lens and sensor are unchanged — you'll be taking pictures of the same quality as you did on the original.
Shooting modes for selfies include a dedicated night mode, a wide selfie mode, and continuous shot.
