As you might recognize already, we
shot at the Ludlow Hotel, one
of my absolute favorite hotels here in the city, and it served as the perfect backdrop for a girl, on the go, running through late evenings and early mornings, from one party to the next — throwing on her earrings as she
dashes out the door, her eyes fixed on the next cab whose headlights are blaring down the street.
You could see similar elements in Lodge Kerrigan's chilly «Claire Dolan» (with a
dash of Polanski in there — an unsettling manicure scene followed by a startling
shot involving a mirror on an armoire)-- and, sure enough, it turns
out that the young, unknown Bahrani so admired Kerrigan's work that he sent him an early cut
of the film and asked for Kerrigan's advice.
We
shot in and
out of the cave over and over again, racing them, racing each other; Being
dashed and splashed by salt spray as they jumped and barked.
Cuphead (or Mugman)
shoots bullets
out of his hands to damage enemies and has both a jump and
dash move to dodge enemy attacks.
These range from the familiar to the surprising, sometimes even within the same weapon: The Charge Blade changes forms, like a «trick weapon» from Bloodborne... but it also requires you to manage a special resource called phials with a series
of complex maneuvers; the Glaive let's you double jump and air
dash... and to get the most
out of it, you need to regularly
shoot a special beetle at various parts
of the monster you're hunting.
The game offers plenty
of offensive and defensive options outside
shooting, as it's possible to employ a melee attack and quickly
dash out of the way.
It's just that the vast majority
of levels end with infuriatingly tough bosses who would feel a whole lot more manageable if I had started the game with an option to
shoot upwards,
dash upwards to deal with bosses that cheaply move
out of range, or be free
of an arbitrary number
of lives.
