small gallery, another example of how the exhibitors were given more
room for their individual visions.

The ground floor has been intricately reconfigured with arched passageways and

in both senses of the word) 6th Light and a typically eccentric film collage by Joseph Cornell — the first solo
show by whom, Carpenter pointed out, was at the Walker
in 1953.
The gallery divides the
show into two
rooms, mostly based on size, with her monumental graphite drawings
in the larger central gallery and a handful of
smaller works
in the back.

rooms are on the back side of the «stage,» the most memorable being Wu Tsang's GREEN

rooms are large enough to comfortably accommodate the art — 31 black paintings (twice as many as have been
shown together
in nearly half a century), plus more than 40 prints, drawings, rarely seen
small sculptures, exhibition announcements and other ephemera.
According to critic Lawrence Alloway, by 1975 this gallery was known as the «Nigger
Room,» «a coinage of black artists who are accustomed to being
shown in this
small area at the Whitney.»
