Some of these works (which have been the focus of solo shows at London's Cabinet Gallery, one in 2004 and the other earlier this year) show family scenes — Camplin posing with her dad and sister at a seaside amusement park, for instance, all of them attired in mock - Victorian fancy dress.

Exterior scenes filmed in Kent show a post-industrial Thames Estuary with desolate structures rendered increasingly strange, such as abandoned boats, a collapsing pier, dilapidated sea forts rising out of the water on stilts, and Margate's now defunct Dreamland amusement park, which opened its doors as a new mass leisure culture emerged in the early 1900s.

Included in the PAFA's show were two works by Angelo Pinto, a large version of Amusement Park, 1935, and a related, smaller study.

(until then, it's all just a freak show made to order for the amusement of conservatives)...
