Riflemaker only has a
small space, so they can't
show any
of my big major works, but they are
showing one major work, called The Butterfly Test Plates (1973 - 74), which comprises five plates that chronicle my studying china
painting in preparation for The Dinner Party.
The current

A 37 - year - old Art Center graduate who was in Sterling Ruby's class, Joshua Nathanson is only now starting to get attention — he's currently having his first solo
show at Various
Small Fires — but the timing is fortuitous, because if Ruby's rambunctious sculptures and big - sky
paintings capture the L.A.
of the aughts, Nathanson's thoughtful, computery, sleek, and telegraphic
paintings exemplify the city's present - day art moment.
When I met up with Peter Doig shortly before last year's retrospective, he explained that one

The American Tour
of Roads
of Arabia contains around 200 objects, but there is a vast difference between exhibitions

A
small, perfectly staged
show of late
paintings by George De La Tour forms an exquisite, poetic accompaniment.
Anne Marie Kornachak, the only artist featured who will not be exhibiting when this
show moves to Jacksonville, Florida,
paints highly mysterious tableaus
of an ambiguous narrative, emphasizing voluminous folds
of fabric and
small hints
of human figuration to illustrate emotion as products
of internal and highly private dynamics.
There, there were a few memorable highlights, such as mirror
paintings by Michelangelo Pistoletto from the 1970s and 80s,
shown by the Repetto Gallery; striking portraits and still - lifes by Wayne Thiebaud,
shown by Allan Stone Projects;
small paintings by Gerhard Richter and Alexej von Jawlensky in the Galerie Ludorff's booth; and Yayoi Kusama's glittering collages, reminiscent
of precious stones,
shown by Omer Tiroche Gallery.
The work
of Hodgkin's that was
shown in the Turner shortlist exhibition - a perfunctory affair compared with the large - scale
shows of today - was a
painting called A
Small Thing But My Own.
