Sam Scott: Still
Lifes, a
showing of primarily
oil paintings along with select watercolors is currently on view at the William Havu Gallery, 1040 Cherokee St, Denver, CO through June 17, 2017.
The early paintings in this group, from 2011,
show a direct connection to the still
life paintings in that they are larger versions of the small pieces used to create the
oil collages.
For this
show, Egan presents several
oil paintings characterized by rich brushstrokes with subjects ranging from portraits of animals, to still -
lifes of objects such as clothing, food, or furniture.
There were many surprising passes: Lot 87 was a thunderbolt design of fluorescent tubes by Dan Flavin that was one of his finest works in that it was an appropriate concept; Lots 122 and 130, large and excellent paintings by Sandro Chia (b. 1946); Lots 203 and 205, a good painting and a superb sculpture by Nancy Graves (1940 - 1995); Lot 223, a good gouache on paper by Sam Francis (1923 - 1994); Lot 242, a very good wood and paper collage by Louise Nevelson (1899 - 1988); Lots 279, 281A, 293, and 309, works by Andy Warhol, and Lot 299, «Fast Sketch Still
Life With Abstract Painting,» a 60 by 90 inch
oil on cut - out aluminum by Tom Wesselman (b. 1931),
shown below.
Lot 18 was one of the finest works in the auction, Lot 18, a still
life,
shown above, by Gerhard Richter of three apples, a 25 1/4 - by - 31 1/2 - inch
oil on canvas, dated 1984.
Wu Dayu's «Documentary Exhibition: The Forgotten, the Discovered Star» at the Chinese Academy of
Oil Painting
showed how distant an artist's creative practice can sometimes be from his or her
life circumstances, even though the two are necessarily intertwined.
More recently, Gail has been focusing on painting still
lifes, twelve of which have been juried by
Oil Painters of America into their
shows.
«Throughout the identity we use a combination of
oil and water textures (referencing backing visuals of
live Grateful Dead
shows), and hand - drawn illustrations created by the incredibly talented Gary Panter.
Tapley notes that the five painters in the
show, Robert Anderson, Daniel O'Connor, Tim Parsley, Emil Robinson and Tina Tammaro, have each committed to «a curiously old - fashioned choice: to keep making pictures by hand, using simple drawing materials, and a grand old medium,
oil paint... these painters [also] devote themselves, at least in part, to another old practice: working from «
life.»
The directors of Loving Vincent will discuss bringing Van Gogh to
life using a staggering 65,000
oil paintings; the film will also
show at the festival.
Examples of this are patchwork compositions of aerial images
showing oil pumps in Denver or the feedlots in Texas that are used to intensify animal farming by speeding up the
life process of cows.
Although less than 25 percent of the lots are by women artists, some significant works by women are for sale: «Roots,» a poignant color screen print by Catlett that the gallery says has not been seen at auction in 20 years (
shown above); «March on Washington,» 1964 (
oil on canvas), a beautifully rendered painting by Alma Thomas (1891 - 1978); Faith Ringgold's 1974 «Night: Window of the Wedding 8,» touted as the first of her fabric paintings to be offered at auction (
shown below); and «Still
Life with Grapefruit,» 1928, described on the frame backing as Lois Mailou Jones's first painting, completed a year after she graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Although the circumstances of this artist's
life might invite the former, the eighteen
oil - pastel drawings that made up the
show,
