The show focuses on her painting, ranging from early works from the 1950s to her later work during the final years of her life.

Lovelace, who will be showing paintings he's made from 1994 to 2016, captures the life of the inner city from memory and «inserts people of color into the language of American painting» through a style that's been called both childlike and Hopper-esque.

Tate Modern's Henri Matisse: The Cut - outs, has already been hailed as one of the exhibitions of the year — a vibrant, life - affirming show of the French artist's abstract collages, which he created when health problems prevented him from painting.

The exhibition also shows how this spirit in painting was fostered by the previous generation, from Walter Sickert to David Bomberg, and how contemporary artists continue to express the tangible reality of life through paint.

By some fortuitous coincidence just a few steps separate «Joan Mitchell: The Last Paintings» at Cheim & Read from «Matta: A Centennial Celebration» at Pace Gallery and each show explosively refutes any notion of youthfulness being the province of the young while giving new life to the phenomenon known as «old age style» — used to distinguish formal characteristic of late works by Titian, Rembrandt, or Cézanne, where the artist just wants to get to the heart of the matter and sloughs off all the fine finish he had needed to impress his audience in earlier years.

In addition to a group of important paintings from the university's collection, loans of artwork from several private collections and public institutions, many shown publicly for the first time in years, provide a unique opportunity to observe the development of the artist's life and work through drawings, paintings, and prints dating from the 1940s to the 1980s.

Hofmann's life is terrific to read about — a European arriving in America in the 1930s, the schools he set up in New York and Provincetown (many of the artists in the RA show were his students), his theory of painting, evolved from observing the world and analysing the Old Masters, and his sheer, galvanising, gutsy energy.

Transplanted from Dumbo to Chelsea for the summer, 247365 presents a show that abandons abstraction and, counterintuitively, explores the reemergence of classical themes — landscape, still life, and portraiture — in painting.

While the artist has eliminated (or temporarily set aside, as time will tell) all but traces of narrative from her working method in larger canvases, she continues to paint heads, roughly life - sized (though this show includes none).

Currently on view is Megan Marrin's solo show Corps, which features seven paintings of the flower in different stages of its life cycle, from peeling to peaking and, finally, to death.

The early paintings in this group, from 2011, show a direct connection to the still life paintings in that they are larger versions of the small pieces used to create the oil collages.

This show focuses on Connor's nature based paintings which offer an artistic escape from urban life.

This painting shows a group of itinerant, socially marginalized circus performers who would have traveled from town to town to earn a living.

At her solo show at Modern Art Oxford earlier this year, Himid featured paintings from a decade - long series for which she painted over pages of the Guardian, accusing the «liberal media» of «simultaneously visualising and making invisible black people's lives».

The show tackles current topics, ranging from social media to political activism, using both traditional and new mediums, including painting, gaming, live performance and bookbinding.
