The drawing
shows sine waves that resemble waves on the surface of water being reflected from two surfaces of a film of varying width, but that depiction of the wave nature of light is only a crude analogy.

He used the Lomb - Scargle routine in IDL to determine the most significant periodicity in the data (= 3.2 days), and then used this as input into a least - squares
sine wave fit to produce the fitted curve
shown.
However, a search for some reconsiliation between the global temperature record and possible BNO (R) forcings by altering its strength and / or timing (be it in the form of square
wave or
sine wave or any other
wave) may
show nothing other than the existence of many competing and controversial alternatives.
The energy requirements for BNO (R) are
shown to be quite large — an oscillating radative forcing of 1.15 Wm ^ -2 peak - to - peak if of square -
wave form, 1.8 Wm ^ -2 if of
sine -
wave form.
It certainly would happen if you put all five
sine waves into independent play, as I
showed after unchecking the «keep all unconstrained parameters nonnegative» box that Rossander left checked: it would always give an R2 of 1.00000 no matter what you changed HadCRUT3 to, even if you changed it to something that looked nothing like a sawtooth.
Don't forget cycles in autocorrelation do not necessarily result from such nice
sine wave looking cycles in the data, but do
show repetitions of pattern.
By applying the same technique to a
sine -
wave (which the audience had agreed exhibits a zero trend), it is possible to
show either a rapidly - accelerating uptrend or a rapidly - plummeting downtrend, depending on the choice of endpoints for the trend - lines on the data.
Pure
sine wave would be extremely surprising, and even if you had any reason to expect such a thing,
showing one cycle only means Girma is proposing steady behaviours on much much longer scales than anything the IPCC considers.
or even a sum of
sine waves — and NOT a straight line — were extended through the average of the CET using an 11 year solar sunspot as a smoothing interval, when would the MWP, LIA, Dark Ages, and RWP
show up as high and low points?
Now, if you want to establish that hypothesis, or if you think that is true, how does
showing that the climate can be simulated by a couple of
sine waves plus a trend
show anything at all?
Using just 4
sine waves in a periodic but stationary function will give a pretty good fit to the modern day temperature decomposition you
showed without invoking any AGW at all.
Secondly the same formula has been
shown to produce an upward trend in a
sine wave which is neutral by nature at all points.
