Even though you may need to lower the weight by 10 - 15 % than you would otherwise you, it is well worth it because it will lead to
significant strength gains.
Of course, larger people with more muscle are generally stronger — but the point is:
significant strength gains are due to increasing neural activation.
Although I trained like mad my fitness suffered although I did see
some significant strength gains, particularly in my squat and deadlift.
