We have no real idea what the
atmosphere of Proxima b is made of, but for the sake of argument the researchers tried out an
atmosphere like Earth's as well as a
simpler one — mostly
nitrogen with a dash of carbon dioxide.
Only a few bacteria and
simple algae have the cellular equipment needed to «fix» the
nitrogen of the
atmosphere into ammonia.
Looking at Proxima b, the team created two simulations — one where it had an Earth - like
atmosphere, and another where it has a much
simpler atmosphere of
nitrogen and traces of carbon dioxide.
If there was an
atmosphere, but one made up of, say,
nitrogen only with no greenhouse effect, then the Moon STILL be
simple, with a small additional damping effect, and no additional warming overall.
