His entire speech hinged on the
simple observation that the addition
of carbon to the
atmosphere was effectively a worldwide subsidy that had contributed to global
warming and prevented humanity from freeing itself from the fossil - fuel era.
One possible strategy for making Mars habitable over the long term is to «terraform» it — manipulate its environment so, in the
simplest terms, the planet
warms up, ice turns into water, and plants can be introduced, which will convert the atmospheric carbon dioxide into oxygen, with the goal
of creating a stable and breathable
atmosphere.
As the ocean
warms, for example, it releases CO2 to the
atmosphere, with one principal mechanism being the
simple fact that the solubility
of CO2 decreases as the water temperature rises [204].
Much
of the special
atmosphere is due to the
warm welcome extended to us by the owners, Dionysios and his family who are rightly proud
of this
simple and very central little hotel.
The
simple fact is that humans put some extra greenhouse gasses into the
atmosphere and that is causing us to
warm outside
of the natural climate path.
Without going into technical details about the dynamics and thermodynamics involved in tropical storms and hurricanes (an excellent discussion
of this can be found here), the basic connection between the two is actually fairly
simple:
warm water, and the instability in the lower
atmosphere that is created by it, is the energy source
of hurricanes.
Simple physics dictates that with less sea ice there is magnified
warming of the Arctic due to powerful albedo feedback; this in turn reduces the equator to pole temperature gradient which slows the jet stream winds causing them to become more meridional; this combined with 4 % more water vapor in the
atmosphere (compared to 3 decades ago) is leading to much more extremes in weather.
I would argue that if we use a
simple radiative model with a variety
of assumptions, no upper
atmosphere cooling but only
warming will occur with increased CO2 (see # 333), based on the radiative transfer equations and the Second Law
of thermodynamics, but when other complexities are introduced, this might change.
The
simplest explanation
of why they are buncum was provided in Rabett Run's comments by one Flavius Collium who followed Eli in pointing out that the greenhouse effect does not require that the colder
atmosphere heat the
warmer earth, but
Add more CO2 and the
atmosphere gets
warmer — very
simple explanation
of why CO2 causes global
warming.
That an increase
of CO2 in the
atmosphere could producing
warming has been verified in
simple lab experiments.
Note 1: A
simple hotspot explanation summarized from this article: Increasing CO2 levels causes
atmosphere to
warm; then
atmosphere causes Earth's surface to
warm;
warming of oceans cause evaporation; increased evaporation leads to more water vapor in the upper troposphere; water vapor is a powerful greenhouse gas that
warms the
atmosphere even more (positive water vapor feedback); the Earth's surface
warms even more; and then auto «repeat and rinse» until Earth's oceans boil, per an «expert.»
It is often said that the greenhouse effect and man - made global
warming theories are «
simple physics», and that increasing the concentration
of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere must cause global
warming.
Simple physics says, if you increase the concentration
of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere, the temperature
of the earth should respond and
warm.
As the ocean
warms, for example, it releases CO2 to the
atmosphere, with one principal mechanism being the
simple fact that the solubility
of CO2 decreases as the water temperature rises [204].
If the Earth was a
simple rock with no water, but a Nitrogen
atmosphere with, say, 250ppm
of CO2, the greenhouse effects
of the CO2 would ensure that the
atmosphere was at least a little
warm.
The
simple remark is that increasing concentration
of a greenhouse gas does two things: it increases absorption
of infrared coming from
warm layers below (a
warming effect) but it also increases emission
of infrared from the layer
of atmosphere in question.
And, all models
of the greenhouse effect, be they
simple shell models or full convective - radiative models have the heat going from the
warmer earth to the colder
atmosphere.
If there was an
atmosphere, but one made up
of, say, nitrogen only with no greenhouse effect, then the Moon STILL be
simple, with a small additional damping effect, and no additional
warming overall.
Looks to me like the much
simpler argument that CO2 is a greenhouse gas; greenhouse gases enhance atmospheric
warming; enormous amounts
of CO2 are now being emitted via the burning
of fossil fuels; and according to various measurements, the temperature
of the
atmosphere appears to be steadily increasing as a result.
To claim global
warming stopped in 1998 overlooks one
simple physical reality - the land and
atmosphere are just a small fraction
of the Earth's climate (albeit the part we inhabit).
Figure 2 shows the Polar Front as a
simple division
of the
atmosphere between cold polar and
warm tropical air.
