In 1996, an amateur archaeologist found
a single upper arm bone sticking out of the steep riverbank — the first clue that the Tollense Valley, about 120 kilometers north of Berlin, concealed a gruesome secret.
And there are numerical patterns: for example, the human
upper arm has a
single bone (the humerus), there are two
bones in the forearm, irregular but distinguishable rows of three followed by four in the wrist, and sets of five for the fingers.
