She used eastern box
turtles, Terrapene carolina — a species that comes in all kinds of shapes,
sizes and colors — to make links between the rich variation in modern specimens
and their fossil relatives from as far back as the Pleistocene, from about 2.6 million to about 11,700 years ago.
