L'Oréal has developed an uncanny human
skin substitute called Episkin that is animal friendly and can determine whether an ingredient will turn toxic in the sun or corrode, penetrate, or irritate human skin.
Once that has been done, there are other potential applications, says the surgeon: for example in orthopaedics for meniscus or ligament injuries or as a
potential skin substitute for deep skin burns.
Prior to the new study, researchers had already developed a more basic type
of skin substitute that had been used successfully in human patients, said Takashi Tsuji, a team leader at RIKEN Center forDevelopmental Biology in Japan.
To treat the wounds on his limbs and side, doctors used a pliable, two -
layer skin substitute called Integra.
If Hale's research proceeds according to plan, within five years he'll have a biomask and
custom skin substitutes to restore melted flesh.
In 2013, Hale met with scientists at Integra LifeSciences to describe his vision of the
ideal skin substitute.
The aim is to make a
synthetic skin substitute that is based on biodegradable polymers and peptides which can be reconstituted with the patients own cells.
Skin substitutes involve different cell composites, such as: fibroblasts, keratinocytes, epithelial cells and / or MSCs transplanted on membranes or with supportive matrix.
Served on research team that succeeded in new cell line sourcing and characterization assay development for a
bioengineered skin substitute accelerating burn victims» healing process by 35 %.
Then he'd place
a skin substitute over the wound — an Integra - like product suitable for the face — and use the biomask again to hasten healing and protect the regenerating skin.
The skin substitute is also being used to make customized grafts for burn victims and for children who can't handle exposure to UV light without risking cancer.
