Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), U.S. - U.K. - Netherlands satellite launched in 1983 that was the first space observatory to map the entire
sky at infrared wavelengths.
After a series of brief studies by infrared instruments carried on sounding rockets had detected about 4,000 celestial sources of infrared radiation, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands built IRAS to map
the sky at infrared wavelengths of 12, 25, 60, and 100 micrometres.
A complete survey of
the sky at infrared wavelengths made during the early 1980s by an unmanned orbiting observatory, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), revealed a large number of dense dust clouds in the Milky Way.

They used images from the UltraVISTA survey, one of six projects using VISTA to survey the
sky at near -
infrared wavelengths, and made a census of faint galaxies when the age of the Universe was between just 0.75 and 2.1 billion years old.
Operating beyond the reaches of the Earth's atmosphere, free of its limiting absorption and thermal background, the Near -

Launched on Jan. 25, 1983, the Earth - orbiting observatory mapped the
sky for 10 months
at infrared wavelengths above the interference of Earth's atmosphere.
The third panel shows the same part of
